Caloocan City

Brief History

Caloocan used to be a barrio of Tondo, Bonifacio’s hometown until it became a municipality in 1815. Brave men and women of Caloocan actively participated in the revolution in 1896 until the Spaniards were finally ousted at the siege of Intramuros in Manila two years after.

The people of Caloocan continued to join fellow Filipinos to fight the American invaders, who occupied the country after Spain sold the Philippines to the United States government. The city saw heavy fighting in the Philippine–American War, in 1899 at the Battle of Caloocan and the Second Battle of Caloocan. With the rift between President Emilio Aguinaldo’s men and General Antonio Luna, the Filipino forces lost the battle that year.

Under the American regime in 1901, Caloocan became one of the towns of the province of Rizal until 1975. Between those years, some neighboring barrios and towns were annexed and then removed from Caloocan.

In 1961, the historic town became a city when President Diosdado Macapagal signed RA 3278 declaring Caloocan as a city.  During the formation of the province of Rizal, Caloocan was included in its matrix until 1975.
